Mission Summary

The Electro Optical Infrared Systems (EOIS) line of business within Leonardo DRS develops, manufactures, and supports infrared and electro-optical solutions for soldiers, ground vehicles and airborne platforms. The Embedded Software Engineer II supports the design, development, integration, verification, and maintenance of embedded software solutions for advanced embedded systems across bare-metal, RTOS, and embedded Linux environments, collaborating closely with systems, hardware, FPGA, and verification teams throughout the product lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, integrate, test, and maintain embedded software applications and device drivers.
  • Develop software for embedded processor platforms including AMD/Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC and MicroBlaze architectures.
  • Implement and debug low-level software interfaces including UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, and other peripheral interfaces.
  • Support software integration activities across hardware, FPGA, and system-level components.
  • Perform software verification, debugging, root-cause analysis, and issue resolution in laboratory and target hardware environments.
  • Participate in board bring-up, hardware/software integration, and system validation activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure technical, schedule, and quality objectives are achieved.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, software design reviews, code reviews, and process improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience in embedded software development.
  • Strong programming skills in C, C++, and Python with demonstrated proficiency in modern C++ development.
  • Experience developing embedded software in one or more of the following environments: Bare-Metal Systems, FreeRTOS, or Embedded Linux.
  • Experience developing, integrating, and debugging low-level device drivers and communication interfaces including UART, I2C, and SPI.
  • Familiarity with software development and collaboration tools such as GitLab, JIRA, and Confluence.
  • Experience supporting sensor-based and imaging-based embedded systems, including systems utilizing EO/IR cameras.
  • U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

Bonus Points

  • Experience developing PC-based engineering or verification tools using C#/.NET.
  • Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and other laboratory test equipment.
  • Experience with board bring-up, hardware integration, system test, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Experience supporting software verification in both target hardware and host-PC environments.
  • Familiarity with video processing, imaging systems, sensor interfaces, and real-time embedded applications.
  • Experience working within regulated or mission-critical industries such as defense, aerospace, medical devices, or industrial systems.
  • Experience developing software for AMD/Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC and/or MicroBlaze-based platforms.
